Survivor Spotlight: Lisa Bouck

One of the most essential aspects of wellness is the support of a health-conscious community, which is why community is one of our 7 Foundations of Fitness. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, we're turning the spotlight to those within our CORE57 community who've battled breast cancer to share their experiences.

Lisa’s Story

This week, we’re sharing Lisa Bouck’s story. Her cancer journey, marked by resilience, positivity, and an unwavering spirit, is a testament to the power of a robust and supportive community.

Could you share a brief overview of your journey with breast cancer? What were some of the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

I felt a very small lump under my arm on July 14, 2022, and another lump just as small. I was fortunate enough to get an ultrasound and 3D mammogram the next day. I got the lump biopsied on July 19, and it was confirmed malignant. A month later, I started six rounds of chemotherapy therapy (a cocktail of four drugs) every three weeks, followed by a lumpectomy, radiation, and some additional immunotherapy for six more months.

The time between the diagnosis and actually starting the “plan” was the most difficult for me. We went from fear, worry, helplessness, and so much more — to action. The biggest challenge was the unknown of what was to come. My faith and the extreme support of my family, friends, and the CORE community were extraordinarily comforting and essential.

How has your perspective on health, wellness, and fitness changed since your diagnosis and treatment?

I have always been focused on my health, including nutrition, running, and working out. One of my biggest fears was that I would not be able to run, workout, or eat a clean vegetarian diet during my treatment, since I had heard those things were not always possible.

I was extremely determined to keep my life as normal as possible during my treatment, including running and coming to CORE daily. I had seen a big change in my body and strength about two weeks before my diagnosis — all thanks to CORE — and I did not want to lose that momentum. Being able to come to CORE was very important to me. I’ve become more resolute in my health and fitness journey and am even more sure to prioritize them now.

Can you share any specific workouts, classes, or personal training sessions at CORE57 that have particularly helped you regain strength and confidence during/after your treatment?

I continue to be extremely grateful that I was able to continue with my workouts and running every day during my treatment. Being able to go to CORE before I had a treatment was so helpful for my anxiety.

It was very difficult many days, but Rebecca, Tammy, and Chandalyn gave me so much support and encouragement in my training sessions. They didn’t treat me any differently. Rebecca would push me when she knew I could do it and high-fived me when she knew I gave it as much as possible.

The Strictly Strength, Butts & Back, CORE, and TRX classes were so good for my body because I could keep the surgery area strong and build it back up (still a work in progress). I could never have done this without Rebecca, the trainers, and the amazing CORE community.

How has being a part of the CORE57 community impacted your journey toward recovery and overall well-being?

The CORE community has been amazing and a blessing. There have been many, many days where it was a struggle to show up, not only because I didn’t feel good, but also because there were so many physical changes, including having to wear a hat and a wig.

Member after member would say an encouraging word to me and make me feel welcome and like I belonged there. Even if I could only do a small weight, I knew people were cheering me on. I chose to focus on all the positives during this journey, and one of them was how the members at CORE made me feel. I have made some incredible friendships.

What advice would you give to other women facing similar challenges?

Unfortunately, I have heard of many women being diagnosed with breast cancer in the last year. Everyone’s journey is different, but the advice I have given to others is to stay in the moment. There is no reason to think ahead or worry about what may or may not happen. Trust in your faith because that is what will get you through. It will bring people to you that you would least expect. You will see kindness and blessings everywhere.

My biggest advice would be to not let cancer control you. Get up every day filled with gratitude and exercise. Your body is amazing and can handle a lot. Treat it well with nourishment and exercise so it can stay strong to fight. This journey is temporary, and it will pass.
