Survivor Spotlight: Jennifer Sanford

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are continuing to put the spotlight on the incredible breast cancer survivors in our CORE57 community. Our survivors have inspiring stories to share about the power of community and wellness, and the valuable lessons they've learned along the way.

Jennifer’s Story

We asked Jennifer Sanford, a member of the CORE57 community and breast cancer survivor, to share her experience with cancer and the impact that fitness and community had on her recovery.

Could you share a brief overview of your journey with breast cancer? What were some of the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

My journey started 15 years ago in 2008, before CORE57 was created. I had a routine mammogram that showed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) – an early form of breast cancer. At the time, doctors did not know how long it would take for the DCIS to progress, and I didn’t want to wait around to find out. So, I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. Luckily, I had been going to an outdoor Boot Camp several days a week, so I was in the best shape of my life. Also luckily, because the cancer was caught early, I never had to have chemo.

How has your perspective on health, wellness, and fitness changed since your diagnosis and treatment?

My perspective is that I never want to stop working out because I think it made my recovery so much easier mentally and physically.

Can you share any specific workouts, classes, or personal training sessions at CORE57 that have particularly helped you regain strength and confidence during/after your treatment?

There is no one specific exercise or class that I prefer. I like them all — except for pull-ups, which are hard for me to do because of my reconstruction. 😜

With CORE57’s personalized coaching, Jennifer’s trainers can adapt to her individual needs and meet her where she is to provide customized workout support best suited for her.

How has being a part of the CORE57 community impacted your journey toward recovery and overall well-being?

I have made many friends throughout the years at CORE. We've formed a supportive community where we keep each other accountable to show up to class, even on days when we don’t feel like it. I schedule my workouts on my work calendar, and my coworkers know how important it is to me to go to my evening classes. I have a shirt that says, “I’m nicer when I work out,” and I believe it!

What advice would you give to other women facing similar challenges?

Find some great friends! Support each other in all things. Reach out when you need people. Keep on exercising!
