Women's Health and Breast Cancer Awareness
October is a special month at CORE57 as we dive into a topic close to our hearts—women's health and breast cancer awareness. It’s a time to honor the incredible strength and resilience of survivors in our community, share their stories, and raise awareness and support for those who continue to fight.
Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women, with 1 in 8 women developing it at some point in their lives. This month, we want to bring attention to the importance of early detection and prevention through regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle.
Celebrating Our Survivors
Last year, we had the privilege of spotlighting some truly remarkable women from our community who are all survivors of breast cancer. If you haven't already, we invite you to read their stories and learn from their perspectives:
Lisa Bouck: Lisa faced her challenges head-on, finding pivotal support from family, friends, and the CORE community. She embraced a fresh perspective on health, focusing on staying present and nourishing her body with exercise. Read Lisa's story.
Betsy Katekovich: Despite testing positive for the BRCA1 gene, Betsy turned her life’s toughest challenge into a journey of wellness and positivity. Her advice is to stay positive, take time for yourself, and make working out a priority. Read Betsy's story.
Julie Seitz: An 11-year survivor, Julie learned to prioritize her health and listen to her body. She found comfort in the support from CORE57's wellness programs and the camaraderie of our community. Community is one of our Foundations of Fitness at CORE57. We believe that together, we are stronger. When facing medical challenges like breast cancer, having a supportive network can make all the difference. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need a quick boost, our community is here to lend an ear and offer encouragement.
The Importance of Early Detection
Early detection is key when it comes to breast cancer. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the chances are for successful treatment.
For women with average risk (such as no family history of breast cancer), the American Cancer Society recommends:
Women between 40 and 44 should consider beginning annual mammograms.
Women 45 to 54 should get annual mammograms.
Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or continue annual mammograms.
Listening to Your Body
Your body often has a way of letting you know when something’s off. If you notice any changes, such as lumps or skin abnormalities, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention. Early detection is important in successfully treating breast cancer, so don't hesitate to speak up and advocate for your health.
Prevention Through Healthy Habits
While there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, and many factors can not be controlled, there are healthy habits that can help reduce the risk.
Keep Up With Regular Screenings: Mammograms can catch early signs of breast cancer, so get them on your calendar.
Maintain a Healthy Weight: Carrying extra weight can increase your risk. Adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help you maintain a healthy weight.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity is a powerful ally in reducing breast cancer risk. Whether it's a vigorous workout or a leisurely walk, staying active is essential. At CORE57, we offer a variety of classes and programs to keep you moving.
Limit Alcohol Consumption: Research has shown a link between alcohol and breast cancer. Reducing your intake can be a proactive step in lowering your risk.
