Survivor Spotlight: Mani Young

In the journey through breast cancer, the value of a supportive community often goes beyond words—it's a powerful force that can make a real difference. This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we are asking some of the breast cancer survivors in our CORE57 community to share their experiences and the lessons they learned along the way about community and wellness.

Mani's Story

Mani, a member here at CORE57, is a resilient breast cancer survivor, whose journey through this challenging disease has been marked by strength, courage, and determination. With her story, she continues to inspire others, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, there's always hope and a supportive community to lean on.

Could you share a brief overview of your journey with breast cancer? What were some of the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

My journey with breast cancer was challenging. In addition to the effects of the chemo and radiation, I was struggling with getting my mobility back. Even after being declared cancer-free by my doctors, I found myself unable to enjoy the activities I once loved. That’s where Turning Point Breast Cancer Rehabilitation stepped in to help guide me through evidence-based research and recommendations.

How has your perspective on health, wellness, and fitness changed since your diagnosis and treatment?

I have always found exercise to be important, but when my breast cancer dropped me into menopause at the age of 42, it shifted my perspective on wellness. It was more important than ever that I shifted my focus from cardio and carbs to strength and protein.

Can you share any specific workouts, classes, or personal training sessions at CORE57 that have particularly helped you regain strength and confidence during/after your treatment?

I discovered CORE through a very good friend of mine. CORE has taken my exercise routine to a whole new level. The private sessions and amazing classes have really helped me stay engaged. I get bored quickly, but all the instructors at CORE offer different and unique experiences that can’t be found in other traditional gyms.

How has being a part of the CORE57 community impacted your journey toward recovery and overall well-being?

From the first time I showed up at CORE, I knew it would be a game changer for me. The instructors challenged me, and the members supported me, sometimes through encouragement, sometimes through laughter. This supportive community became an integral part of my recovery and wellness journey.

What advice would you give to other women who are facing similar challenges?

I would encourage them to continue a modified workout routine but make sure they take time for themselves as well. Most importantly, build a support system. People genuinely want to help you in this trying time — accept help when it's offered. If someone asks if they can do something, they mean it.

And for the supporters: Instead of offering vague help, suggest something specific. Ask if you can drive them to chemo, bring lunch, take their kids to a movie, or have your husband take their husband out to a beer to give him something to focus on.
