Survivor Spotlight: Betsy Katekovich
Breast cancer isn't a journey anyone should take alone — a strong, supportive community can be a lifeline. This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we're opening up the floor to some of our breast cancer survivors in our CORE57 community. They're ready to share their experiences and the lessons they've picked up about community and wellness along the way.
Betsy’s Story
Meet Betsy, a resilient mother of three who has weathered the storm of breast cancer with unwavering courage. Tested positive for the BrCA1 gene and with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer, she's turned her life's toughest challenge into an inspiring journey of wellness, positivity, and strength.
Could you share a brief overview of your journey with breast cancer? What were some of the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
My mom had battled breast cancer twice, and shortly after I had my youngest child in 2009, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. My OBGYN insisted that I get tested for the BrCA gene at my six-week postpartum check up. I reluctantly agreed and, of course, I was positive for BrCA1.
At the time, I was nursing my youngest and didn't want to stop, but my doctor insisted on a mammogram. When my daughter was eight months old, my pump broke, and I took that as a sign that it needed to be done.
I had a mammogram two months later, and a small lump was found. We did a biopsy the next day, and it was malignant. I met with a surgeon right away to discuss a double mastectomy. Two weeks later, I underwent the procedure, followed by six rounds of chemo. I was stage I, but with the breast cancer gene, it was best to do chemo.
My biggest challenge was being able to still be the best mom that I could be with three small daughters (ages one, four, and seven) while undergoing surgery and chemo. I couldn't lift my one-year-old for quite some time, and that was heart-wrenching. With a positive attitude, a great husband, and friends, I got through it and came out stronger at the end.
How has your perspective on health, wellness, and fitness changed since your diagnosis and treatment?
My family tries to eat a clean, Whole30-type diet. We try to workout as much as we can and stay active. My problem is that I get so caught up in the lives of my daughters that exercise has taken a backseat the last few years. Since joining CORE57, I have made it a priority to make it to classes and have really enjoyed it all.
Can you share any specific workouts, classes, or personal training sessions at CORE57 that have particularly helped you regain strength and confidence during/after your treatment?
I am way past treatment, but I love the mobility and movement classes. I have slight lymphedema so stretching has really helped me with that and I feel so much better.
How has being a part of the CORE57 community impacted your journey toward recovery and overall well-being?
I am definitely more happy and positive after working out. CORE57 has brought more joy back into my life, which I feel is half the battle. It's not about achieving happiness, but more so "happierness," which I attain everyday when I come to the gym.
What advice would you give to other women who are facing similar challenges?
Positivity is half the battle. Stay positive. Take time for yourself and make working out a priority in your life.
